Montauk SurfMasters 2016 Results

Last year was a tough year all around Montauk in the Surf, but as usual the Montauk SurfMasters put up some impressive fish for both the Spring and Fall tournament.

Fall Tournament

The fall was a season of many ups and downs in MTK with plenty of fish taken on both sides of the point, with the best days around our stronger northeast weather. For most of the season, there was an abundance of bait with consistent shots of smaller bass and large blues up to 20lbs. The migration of big bass just did not hold in tight to the shore in Montauk this fall, but plenty of decent fish were released the the Montauk Surfcasters with the peak fishing the end of Sept into the first week of October. We ended the year, with tons of small fish along the sand from Montauk through East Hampton.

The final leaderboard, Ben McCarron 1st 55.14, Larry Welcome 2nd 23lb and Wilan Pilco 3rd 22.3lb in Adult Wader. Mary Ellen Kane holds the top spot in Womens’ division with a 19.7lb fish, taking second with Christine Schell taking third place to round out the womens division. For wetsuit, John Bruno took first with a 37lb fish in early October.

Spring Tournament

The 2016 spring run had a real late start and the solid action in Montauk did not heat up until July after the tournament ended.  The best action was based around the abundance of adult Bunker as it moved in tight to the beach with the summer heat.  Gorilla blues and big bass dominated action for a solid two weeks, with most fish released.  Many of the SurfMasters were having fun in shorts taking shots at big fish just after the bell rang on the spring tournament.  With a slow start, it ended strong, with a few quality fish by John Bruno and Mike Milano.  The first 2 weeks of the tournament, had a few SurfMasters taking fish in the mid 20lb to 30lb class but were released for the hopes of some of the spring large which did not show up in time.
